Ubuntu tailors its installs by providing different CD/DVD install disc for different releases and versions (see Table 2-1). The Desktop CD is not the only Ubuntu installation available. Ubuntu provides two other CDs, the Server CD designed for servers and the Alternate CD, which provides specialized features like LVM and RAID. The Alternate CD also supports small installations with less than 320MB of RAM, automated installations, customized OEM systems, and the upgrading of older releases that have no network access. The Ubuntu DVD, though also a Live DVD, also includes the same install options as the Alternate CD, as well as the server software included on the Server CD. The Wubi installation option will install a fully functional Ubuntu system on a virtual hard disk on a Windows system.
- Desktop CD Run as a Live CD or install Ubuntu Linux with the GNOME desktop and a standard set of applications.
- Desktop USB Run as Live USB or install Ubuntu Linux with the GNOME desktop and a standard set of applications, uses the Ubuntu Desktop CD image installed on USB drive.
- Server install CD Install Ubuntu with a standard set of servers, uses the command line interface (no desktop).
- Alternate CD Installs specialized features like LVM, RAID, encrypted file systems, small systems, and OEM configurations.
- Wubi Install to a virtual hard disk in Windows.
- Ubuntu Netbook Edition (UNE) USB. A Live USB for use on Netbooks. You can also use it to install Ubuntu on a netbook. Supports screens up to 10 inches, and requires at least 256MB RAM.
- Install/Live DVD Install Ubuntu Linux with the GNOME desktop and a more extensive set of applications. The Text Mode Install also allows you install servers as well as just a command line system without the desktop. You can also set up LVM and RAID arrays during the installation.
The Desktop CD, Alternate CD, Server CD, and Ubuntu Netbook Edition (UNE) are available at: http://releases.ubuntu.com/maverick The Install/Live DVD is available at: http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/maverick/release/ The Install/Live DVD is meant to install primarily Ubuntu, and provides a large selection of software, though it can also serve as a Live DVD. It has the advantage of providing a large collection of installable software without needing network access to a repository. It also includes all the servers, all those also found on the Server CD. If you choose a Text Mode install, you can choose servers to install (F4, Modes) during the install procedure. The DVD Text Mode Install also allows you option to install just a command line interface without a desktop. This is useful for server-dedicated systems or those with little graphics support. It also provides LVM and RAID options during installation. All releases have 32 and 64-bit versions.
Other Ubuntu editions include Kubuntu and Edubuntu (see Table 2-1). The Kubuntu CD installs KDE as the desktop instead of GNOME, along with KDE software. You could also install Kubuntu later on a GNOME install by selecting the kubuntu-desktop meta-package for software installation. Kubuntu can then become an option in your login window sessions menu. You should download these editions from their Web sites directly. They are also available from the Ubuntu download sites. For Kubuntu you can use: http://releases.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/maverick/
Edubuntu is installs a collection of educational software, instead of the standard GNOME
office and multimedia applications. The Edubuntu version provides three CDs, a desktop, server, and server add-on. The server add-on provides additional educational applications. http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/edubuntu/releases/10.10/release/
The Mythbuntu, Xubuntu, and Ubuntu Studio are all available, along with all the other
editions and Ubuntu releases, on the cdimage server at: http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/
