Installation Startup for the Ubuntu Alternate CD and Install/live DVD

The Ubuntu Alternate CD and Install/Live DVD use the original installation start up screen used in previous releases. A simple cursor-based menu is displayed whose items you can choose using your keyboard arrow keys and the ENTER key. Function keys allow you to choose install options.

Ubuntu Install/Live DVD

The Install/Live DVD is designed for users who intend to perform an installation, though
it also serves as a Live DVD. It is a full DVD with over 4GB of software on the disc. As with the CD, you will have the option to just try Ubuntu or go directly to the Install procedure. The Install option will install the Ubuntu desktop. The Install DVD install screen displays the following options:

Try Ubuntu without installing
Install Ubuntu
Install Ubuntu in text mode
Check CD for defects
Test Memory
Boot from first hard disk
Rescue a broken system

“Install Ubuntu in text mode” entry operates much like the Alternate CD. You can install LVM file systems and include RAID support. You can also choose to install additional software packages, including servers, as well as particular packages. Installation is performed without a graphical interface, using text boxes you navigate with keyboard arrow, TAB, and ENTER keys. If you are having trouble with your display, you can use this option to install Ubuntu first, and then try to later configure your graphics card and monitor.

The Ubuntu DVD’s text mode install also has an option to install servers (F4) or install just a command line system (no desktop). In this respect, the DVD also doubles as a server install disk, including all the servers found on the Server CD. To be able to install a server during installation, you press the F4 key (Modes) and select the “Install a server” entry. There is also an entry for installing an LSTP server.

Modes (F4) added for DVD “Install Ubuntu in text mode”
> Install a server
> Install a command-line system
> Install an LTSP server

You can also use the DVD to boot from the first hard disk, should there be an Ubuntu system already installed there, “Boot from first hard disk.” This can be helpful if you have
problems booting to your system. You can use the DVD to boot to the installed system and then try to configure a solution.

If an installed system fails for some reason, you can use the Ubuntu DVD to try to fix it. Choose “Rescue a broken system” to start up the system in the command line, mounting it to a directory from which you can access the broken system. You can then try to change configuration settings to fix the problem. You will be able to choose from the same menu described later in the “Rescue a broken system” section. The Alternate CD also has the “Rescue a broken system” option.
